Strolling thru my itunes list and came across one of my old files titled “One half of Daft Punk”, it’s the guy Thomas’ group called “Stardust”. Drum and Bass heads know it well. It has been used on many dance tracks and sampled on many more…if you don’t start tapping your fingers and stomping your feet to this track, you can’t dance!.
PS - check the cool take-off from SM airport in this video, Enjoy.
Ok, Skool is back in. Flashback to 1985 the Ultramagnetic MC’s start funking up th place…then in 92′ “Poppa Large” does a doozy on all fools that can’t really rap. It doesn’t get any milkier and waxier than this…real flow. Although I am personally a fan of all of the 3 records the crew released, this is probably Kool Keith’s best flowing rhyme. Word to producer Ced Gee, with out his sampling genius things would have turned out much less inspired, and Dre and Tupac would have not come with “California Love”…the Ultramagnetic MC’s - enjoy.
Dam-Funk! - no samples - no loops, just pure DJ funkyness…the Electrifying Mojo would be proud. I come from way back in the funky days of Detroit 80’s funk, and I can tell you this, I’m backing “DF”, check it out here.

Class is back in session kids. This weeks track comes to you from the spectacular Grace Jones 1981 release “Nightclubbing”. “Pull Up to the Bumper” has been a long-time favorite of DJ’s the world over, and nothing says dance, music, sex, romance like this track. There is only one Grace Jones. With her ‘new-wave’ style, pop-art inspired persona, she was a real deal on the 1970’s and 80’s dance club scene…all the while playing muse to Andy Warhol. Visually stunning was her look (she was a successful fashion model before a performer) and it was all New York ala Studio 54. Enjoy!
Funkin’ for Jamaica, Tom Browne. Isn’t this one of those tracks that you can’t always say who it’s by, but everytime you hear it you turn up the radio a little bit?…yeah, that’s this track. Jazz fusion, funky goodness. Funky, Black, White, Puerto-rican, everybody’s just a-freakin’.
In this installment of “Track of the Week” we visit one of the seminal bands of the late 70’s early 80’s “new romantic” era…this particular song title is fitting at this point in time when all you hear is the doom and gloom of the economy, and the state of the “global economic slowdown”…you may find yourself thinking that there must be “More Than This” on the tele or in the news…well, here you go. Roxy Music, featuring the great songwriter Brian Ferry on vocals. Don’t forget to check the swanky nautical style of Brian Ferry in the Love Is The Drug video…hey, they say nautical is back “in”?
The Bad Brains are and will remain at the conerstone of the punk/rock/reggae movement. There are many tracks by the Bad Brains that exemplify their unique style and originality, but “I Against I” seems perfectly fitting at this point in time, and what better way to celebrate “Fat Tuesday” than with a little bit of Bad Brains? PS. check the “Poison” spray painted tag on the wall! -80’s baby, they don’t make’em like that anymore.
“Ceremony”. I really like this song/video for a few reasons. First is the classic nature of the New Order track. It’s one of those songs that exemplifies that quintessential teen-age time-capsule vibe. I mean, when I hear this song it instantly takes me back to nostalgia land and at the same time it sounds very new and fresh, and full of wonder. It makes you want to go out and take a walk in the city with headphones on, kind of like in your own world, yet still part of the vibe of the city…This version is played by Radiohead in some house, and it looks like they are having a lot of fun with it, not to mention it sounds really good! -Enjoy.
I’m starting a new blog section, It’s called “Mike’s Track of the Week”…this week it’s ‘Inspiration Information, by Shuggie Otis. School it.
