Warming up with Mike
The older guy pictured above was a neighborhood classic. He was smoking and trying to coach us from outside. He even tried to show us an escape from the mount which did not work at all. I should have made him sign a waiver. His eyes showed real panic until I demonstrated the proper technique to get out from underneath someone. All those years of kung fu…
Call 310-800-3999 to book a free class or just drop by. Make sure you’re freshly showered, trim your nails, wear gym shorts and a tee, and prepare to have a great time and a great workout.
Hiroshi Fujiwara (Nigo’s old boss) is involved with a company called Fragment Design. They designed this sleek, limited edition, matt black Rolex Watch, from the Bamford Watch Department, to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of SOPH. Check this out. I don’t usually jock watches, but I have a small collection, and I am going to add this to it. Hey, IF YOU ARE HIP, you can pick up the LUDWIG “Hoover” watch for a fraction of the price…interestingly enough, it is very similarly packaged? Cop yours now!
I’ve been following Queen Kwong for a bit now. Carré Callaway (car-ray) is the talented and beautiful front-woman. She plays multiple instruments, and writes all the lusic and lyrics. She’s smart as they come. And she loves cats. Follow her to the top.
I just recently started listening to music again after a very long break…maybe 15 years give or take a few months here and there to listen to old Elvis records. Like Rip Van Winkle I awoke after a long slumber. I should have stayed asleep. Last week I encountered the picture above as representative of what “music” is today. I guess you can say I’m not impressed. This is the “DJ” at a local restaurant that I love. They have great sausages and beer which appeals to my Teutonic leanings, but a computer mixing songs is the biggest bullshit I’ve ever seen. I know I’m coming off as an old Scrooge, but WTF! I went to a concert the other day at the invitation of a friend. It was Imogen Heap. She sang and played the piano, but most of the work was done by a computer. Maybe musicians do this now because there’s so little money in the business and they don’t want to split it with a band. To be fair, I walked out of the show after two songs, but the opening act was more of the same. He sang a little and worked his computer, but it was a far cry from a Merl Haggard concert. It wasn’t even DEVO or Run-DMC. I would have preferred schlocky entertainment by crooners Robbie Williams or Rod Stewart. If this is what we have to look forward to then it’s over. One more sign the Apocalypse is upon us (to borrow a theme from Sports Illustrated).
Blood brother Bill Tocco checks in today with this insane blast from the past photo of him ripping Endless Summer ( Detroit ) –looks like it’s late 70′s here. Check the style…Hawk board, Chucks, it is a real classic photo. For those of you who remember, Bill Tocco was the #1 AM vert skateboarder in 1989, and he used to crush his competition with fierce endurance, blazing speed, and boosting stylish huge airs. Endless Summer was the best, I remember winning the NBL regionals there for 13X class BMX… and then I quit to start skating. I have been meaning to put together a special project t-shirt series featuring Tok Dads art for LUDWIG, and if I get my shit together I’ll make it happen soon. I hear Danforth is in town, I’ll have to check him out too. -Word.
If you watched the CBS broadcast of the Strikeforce event last night then you know the outcome. Fedor knocked out Rogers mid-way through the second round of the fight, if you did not see it try this link. Fedor is not unbeatable, but he has yet to be matched up against the same type of competitor. I use the term “competitor” because that’s what he is doing, and he’s doing it at the highest level. Fedor has the ability to take the element of “fight” out of the fight equation, and that is what separates him from the rest. It’s why he is so composed, relaxed, and “loose” (Brett Rogers used the term “loose” when referring to Fedor 6x in the post-fight interview) – it is this quality that is remarkable in Fedor and makes him dangerous. It is the art of “fighting without fighting” -Bruce Lee.
Broken nose and all, Fedor remained calm, cool and composed. Rogers never saw it coming.
